Freshman Hassan Whiteside was named the C-USA Rookie of the Week by a media panel representing each conference member for games through Jan. 17.
Whiteside averaged 17 points, 13 rebounds and nine blocks in a 2-0 week for the Thundering Herd as it extended its overall win streak to six games. The freshman picked up his second triple-double of the season in a road win over UCF Wednesday (14 points, 14 rebounds and 10 blocks). He almost repeated the feat again Saturday against Tulane with a career-high 20 points (shooting 9-of-14 from the field), 12 rebounds and eight assists. Whiteside is the NCAA Division I leader in blocks and now has 95 for the season (5.6 per game).
Whiteside is the only freshman in C-USA history to register a triple-double and becomes just the second player overall, joining former Cincinnati standout Kenyon Martin, to register two in a career. Whiteside and Ohio State's Evan Turner are the only two players with a pair of triple-doubles this season. This is Whiteside's third C-USA Rookie of the Week honor.
