WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.- The 2011 Wake Forest Fall Tennis Invitational drew to a close on Sunday afternoon, and amongst the winning competitors were two of Marshall's doubles' teams and freshman singles player Ellie Ball.
The No. 4 seeded doubles team of Dominika Zaprazna and Maria Voscekova lived up to their No. 36 national preseason ranking by sweeping East Tennessee State's Kedzo and Jaime 8-0 in the A Flight's final matchup. The pair made a run on Friday and Saturday, winning a total of four matches en-route to championship victory on Sunday.
Meanwhile, Karli Timko and Ellie Ball claimed yet another convincing win for the Thundering Herd tennis team by sweeping UNC-Greensboro's Sutherland and Falcon 8-0 in the C Flight final. Timko and Ball rode a first round bye into the quarterfinals, and three wins later were left standing as the champions of the flight.
Ball found even more success in the E Flight of the singles tournament, carrying a No. 2 seed all the way to a three set victory over Winthrop's Ekin Gunaysu in the finals. Ball defeated a total of four opponents to take the championship.
Elsewhere, Kara Kucin barely missed out on winning the singles D Flight when she lost 6-4, 6-1 to Winthrop's Giovanna Portioli in the championship match. Kristina Koprcina took third place in the C Flight with a victory over Davidson's Soares, and Dominika Zaprazna finished fourth in the A Flight after losing to Missouri's Maria Christensen in the third place match. Koprcina and Kucin rounded out Marshall's tournament by taking fifth place in the doubles B Flight.
The Herd will now take a three week break before seeing action in the Atlantic Regionals in Norfolk, Va., on October 21-25.
