HUNTINGTON, W.Va.-Seven Marshall programs had perfect APR scores in 2011-12, while 12 had rates that ranked at or above the national average in figures that were released Tuesday by the NCAA.
"I am ecstatic with the progress that our student-athletes have made," said Mike Hamrick, Marshall's Director of Athletics. "Today's numbers are a testament to the hard work and dedication put forth by our coaches and academic support staff to help us excel in the classroom."
Marshall's women's cross country, men's and women's golf, women's soccer, tennis and indoor and outdoor track and field teams all posted rates of 1000 last year.
John Mercer's tennis program had a multi-year rate of 1000, which resulted in last week's recognition by the NCAA for its outstanding number.
"This is the third time that John's program has been recognized by the NCAA," Hamrick said. "He does a tremendous job of producing quality student-athletes who are winners, both on and off the court."
Over half of Marshall's programs also had multi-year rates above the national average of 974.
Each year, the NCAA tracks the classroom performance of student-athletes on every Division I team through the annual scorecard of academic achievement, known as APR. The rate measures eligibility, graduation and retention each semester or quarter and provides a clear picture of the academic performance in each sport. The most recent APRs are multi-year rates based on scores from the 2008-09, 2009-10, 2010-11 and 2011-2012 academic years.
