Morehead State Downs Herd, 77-68

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. -- Angelo Warner had 23 points on 7-for-10 shooting to lead Morehead State past Marshall 77-68 Wednesday evening in the Henderson Center.
The Eagles improved to 3-4 overall, while the Thundering Herd fell to 3-2.
MSU got 11 points from Marquel Willis and 10 apiece from Karam Mashour and Kareem Storey. Mashour and Story had four assists apiece and Mashour was the team's top rebounder with nine.
Marshall was led by Ryan Taylor's double-double of 13 points and 10 rebounds. Shawn Smith and Austin Loop had 10 points apiece as well. Aleksa Nikolic had a team-best four assists and Taylor posted three blocks.
The Eagles shot 56.1 percent in the first half (17-30), but cooled to 39.1 percent in the 2nd (9-23). They finished 49.1 percent (26-53) for the game and 10-18 from 3-point range (55.6 percent).
Neither team shot particularly well from the free throw line (Marshall 15-26, MSU 15-28).
The Eagles raced out to a 16-point lead (38-22) on a 3-pointer by Mashour and held a 13-point advantage (50-37) at the break.
The Herd tried to claw its way back several times in the second half only to see Morehead come up with response after response.
A Ryan Taylor layup cut the lead to six (54-48) with 15:02 left but Willis buried a 3-pointer on the next possession.
Smith connected again with a 3 at the 13:44 mark to close the gap to four (57-53) but Willis hit another long-range shot to push it back to seven.
Taylor knocked it back down to six (67-61) on a jumper with 4:56 left but that is as close as the home team would get.
The Herd hosts Cleveland State Friday evening at 8 p.m. in its next outing.
