HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - Marshall University Director of Athletics Mike Hamrick announced Friday that Jacob Gilliam will become the new head cheerleading coach. He replaces Kelsey Waybright who is pursuing another opportunity after two years of service.
"As a Son of Marshall, I am excited and honored to have the opportunity to work with the amazing athletes and represent Marshall University," Gilliam said. "I look forward to continuing to develop our program to enhance the game-day experiences and to represent Marshall with pride at our own competition. I have high expectations for the team and athletes this season. I feel very blessed to be a part of this exceptional group of cheerleaders and Marshall University."
Gilliam, a Wayne native and Marshall alumnus, cheered for the Thundering Herd from 2008-10 before graduating with a bachelor's degree in physical education. He has served as a coach at the high school level for over two years, most recently as the assistant coach at Wayne High School. From July 2012 through May 2014, Gilliam served as the head cheerleading coach at Morgantown High School, along with teaching at South Middle School.
After graduating from Marshall in December 2011, Gilliam received his master's degree in school health in May 2014 from West Virginia University.
