HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - A goal by junior Rimario Gordon (Kingston, Jamaica) was not enough for Marshall men's soccer Friday, as No. 19 South Carolina picked up a 2-1 Conference USA win at Veterans Memorial Soccer Complex in Huntington.
Marshall is now 4-6-0 (0-3-0 C-USA), while the Gamecocks move to 6-2-1 (3-0-0 C-USA).
AGAINST THE GAMECOCKS
Scoring opened in the 12th minute when South Carolina's Kevin Walker received a long ball in the box from Kurtis Turner. Walker headed the ball past Herd keeper Bijan Gloston (Clarksville, Tenn.) for the first goal.
From there, Marshall would move heavily into attack mode, outshooting the Gamecocks 9-3 in the second half. The Herd's persistence would pay off with a goal by Gordon in the 65th minute. The assist on the goal was credited to senior Ryan Forde (London, England), who had a shot on goal saved, which Gordon pounced on for the rebound, his third of the season (tied for the team lead).
Both teams continued to search for the win from there. The Gamecocks made the breakthrough in the 84th, when Bjorn Gudjonsson collected a rebound from a Danny Deakin shot and slotted home the Gamecocks goal for the win.
The Herd outshot the Gamecocks 11-10 and also had the edge in corner kicks, 8-4. Gloston made four saves for the Herd in 90 minutes.
THE GRAY AREA
Coach Bob Gray on the match:
"That second half may have been one of the best halves we've played in the last two seasons. Even last year, when we won some big games, we did not play that kind of soccer. We created plenty of scoring opportunities. That's the frustrating part of it, because we didn't get anything out of it."
