Mountaineers take 5-2 decision, win third straight in series
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Marshall's attempt at a comeback Sunday was too little, too late, as West Virginia raced out to a 3-0 lead and held on for a 5-2 win at the Summit Tennis Academy.
Marshall took a step in the right direction during doubles play, winning the opening match before dropping the doubles point. Liz Stefancic and Madi Ballow took down the Mountaineers' paring of Nicole Roc and Anastasia Bovolskaia, 6-3, to give the Herd an early advantage before WVU came back with wins in the other two matches to take the point. Anna Smith and Daniela Dankanych were defeated by Christina Jordan and Sofia Duran at the top spot, 6-3, while Victoria Walter and Matilde Mulatero fell to Anne-Sophie Courteau and Abigail Rosiello, 6-2, at the No. 3 spot in the deciding doubles match.
The Thundering Herd got off to a rocky start in singles play, dropping the first two matches in straight sets. Dankanych was defeated by Bovolskaia at the No. 3 spot, 6-2, 6-2, while Ballow fell to Courteau at the No. 4 spot, 6-2, 6-3.
Smith took care of business on the top court for the Thundering Herd, defeating Jordan in three sets, 6-1, 4-6, 6-3, but the Mountaineers clinched the match when Duran rallied from down a set to defeat Walter, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3.
In the remaining two singles matches, Stefancic extended her win streak to two with a 7-6 (5), 6-2 win over Giovanna Caputo, while Mulatero took a set off Rosiello before falling in a super tiebreak, 3-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-6).
