ATHENS, Ohio – The Marshall University men's basketball team (7-4) dropped a 75-65 decision on the road to the Ohio Bobcats (8-2) on Wednesday night in Athens, Ohio.
"It was a physical game, especially in the first half," Marshall head coach Dan D'Antoni said after the loss. "We didn't react well to it. They (Ohio) cut down our ball movement and cuts. You have to give them credit, but some of it was us. We have to be tougher than that."
Freshman Obinna Anochilli-Killen made eight of his 11 field-goal attempts for a team-high 18 points. The forward fell a rebound shy of a double-double with a team-high nine rebounds. He also had a team-high three steals and two blocks.
Junior Taevion Kinsey followed with 15 points. The Columbus, Ohio, native went 7-for-9 from the charity stripe and grabbed seven boards.
Freshman David Early scored 14 points and redshirt sophomore Andrew Taylor added 11. Each made three baskets from behind the arc, and Taylor had a team-high five assists.
Ohio's Mark Sears led all players with 24 points on a 6-for-12 shooting night. Sears made all 10 of his free-throw attempts.
The Bobcats scored the first four points of the game, but Early hit a pair of threes and Anochili-Killen made a layup between makes by the Bobcats to keep it a one-point deficit, 9-8, at the 15:38 mark.
After the two sides traded 4-0 runs, Ohio tallied 17 of the next 24 points to put the Herd at a 30-19 deficit with five minutes left in the first half. The two teams traded baskets the rest of the way as Marshall trailed 39-28 at halftime.
The Bobcats started the second half on an 8-3 run and led MU, 47-31, with 17:38 left on the clock.
However, Marshall had a 7-0 run from 13:59 to 11:27 to cut the deficit to 10, 53-43. After a 6-0 run by the Bobcats, the Herd put together another 7-0 run and trailed by single-digits, 59-50, with 6:20 remaining in the game.
A made triple by Taylor at the 1:57 mark, capped off a 9-2 Marshall run and cut the Ohio lead to just five points, but the Bobcats ended the game on a 7-2 advantage to hold off the Herd.
