Thundering Herd players selected in second, third rounds

HUNTINGTON, W.Va.– Marshall's men's soccer program had two student-athletes who were chosen in the 2022 Major League Soccer (MLS) SuperDraft on Tuesday, as defender Nathan Dossantos went to the Orlando City SC in the second round as the 46th overall pick while midfielder Victor Dias was drafted by the Vancouver Whitecaps in the third round with the 86th overall selection.

The 2022 SuperDraft marked the first time in program history that Marshall had more than one player selected, and the third-straight draft that a Herd player was picked. Paulo Pita was drafted in the first round, 24th overall, by Los Angeles FC in the 2020 draft and Jamil Roberts was taken in the third round, 77th overall, by Sporting KC in the 2021 draft. Byron Carmichael was the first Marshall player to be selected in the MLS draft back in 2003, picked in the sixth round at 60th overall by the Kansas City Wizards. Jeremy Ashe was taken in the fourth round in 2006 at 46th overall by the Chicago Fire and Daniel Withrow was drafted in the fourth round, 66th overall in 2013.

Dossantos appeared in 36 matches with 35 starts in his two seasons with Marshall recording one goal and two assists. During this past 2021 season, he was one of two players to start in all 18 games while also becoming the first player in program history to be awarded the Conference USA Defensive MVP. Dossantos was also named to the 2021 United Soccer Coaches Southeast Region first team, as well as being named First Team All-C-USA. During his Herd career, Dossantos was named league Defensive Player of the Week five times. In 2021 he helped lead the defensive effort that set program records for consecutive shutouts at seven-straight (Sept. 20-Oct. 19) and going 760 minutes and 37 seconds of game time without conceding a goal. Dossantos was a major force on the back line, especially during the spring 2021 season as Marshall led the nation with 11 clean sheets on the way to its first ever National Championship. The Oakville, Ontario, Canada native was named to the NCAA All-Tournament Team after the Herd registered three-straight shutouts to finish the championship run.

Dias finished his Herd career tied for seventh all-time in assists (15) to go along with 14 goals and 43 total points, as well as a trophy case full of accolades. This past season he was the Conference USA Co-Midfielder of the Year, First Team All-C-USA selection, a United Soccer Coaches Third Team All-American, a First Team Southeast Region selection and a Senior CLASS Award Finalist. Known as "The Magician" for his moves in the open field, tight spaces and ball-handling skills Dias helped turn the Herd into a championship contender during his time with the Green & White. He became nationally recognized during the spring 2021 season as a United Soccer Coaches First Team All-American and was named to the NCAA All-Tournament Team. Dias converted the final penalty kick in the shootout to take down No. 1 Clemson in the Sweet 16 and then assisted on all three of the game-winners against No. 8 Georgetown in the Elite 8, No. 16 North Carolina in the Final Four and then versus No. 3 Indiana in the National Championship.
