BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The ninth-ranked Marshall University men's soccer team (11-4-4) saw its season come to an end in the third round of the 2022 NCAA Division I Men's Soccer Tournament to the 13th-seeded Indiana Hoosiers (12-4-6), 1-0, on Sunday night in Bloomington, Indiana.
"We gave up a little too much at the beginning of the game," Herd men's soccer head coach Chris Grassie said after the game. "We needed to get a little more pressure to their backline because they were playing behind us and looking for flick-ons. I thought we gave up too much territory. Then as a result corners from that."
The two teams had a long feeling out period before graduate goalkeeper Oliver Semmle saved an attempt by Indiana forward Ryan Wittenbrink in the 40th minute. Semmle followed up with a save on a Patrick McDonald attempt in the 44th minute to keep the contest scoreless after the first half.
Senior Joao Souza had three shots go off target in the first 45 minutes of match with graduate student Collin Mocyunas going off target on an attempt.
The Hoosiers went on top in the contest at the 46:54 mark as a shot by Brett Bebej found the back of the net.
Semmle then stepped up and made a pair of saves 22 seconds a part in the 54th minute on shots by Maouloune Goumballe.
The Herd recorded its first shot on goal off a free kick by redshirt senior Milo Yosef, but it was saved by IU goalkeeper JT Harms at the 60:52 mark. Freshman Ryan Holmes followed with an attempt in the 65th minute that was saved by Harms.
In the 76th minute, Semmle made his fifth save of the game to keep the deficit 1-0.
MU had shots by Yosef and junior Adam Aoumaich which didn't find the target in the final 14 minutes as the Herd fell to the Hoosiers.
Holmes, Yosef and Souza each had a game-high three shots in the contest,
