Virginia native will join Spears’ senior leadership team
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — Rodney Kasey has joined Marshall Athletics as the Assistant Athletic Director for Digital Strategy and Brand Management, Director of Athletics Christian Spears announced Friday.
Kasey, 29, will take over the athletic department's rebranded media relations division, where he will apply his varied skill set to assist local, regional and national media in telling Marshall's story; create content via videos, photos, and graphics; help manage Marshall's social media accounts; and provide a vision for a consistent brand identity to help market and promote Marshall's athletic programs and student-athletes. He will also join Spears' senior leadership team.
"We are tremendously excited to announce the hiring of Rodney Kasey," Spears said. "He brings an intellect and work ethic that will serve our student-athletes extremely well. He is overtly conscientious and meaningfully connects to the work he does while looking for ways to ensure the best possible outcomes for everyone involved.
"He will absolutely manage our brand and promote our programs. I am genuinely excited for Rodney and the Herd."
Kasey comes to Marshall from Bluefield University, where he held the title of Assistant Athletic Director for Creative Media and Student Development. Kasey directed Bluefield's social media strategies and all social media pages; created video and photo content; directed gameday operations; posted live content during sporting events; oversaw the school's strength and conditioning program; and helped student-athletes rehab injuries.
"I am forever grateful for my time in Bluefield and the experiences that have helped prepare me for the next chapter," Kasey said. "The opportunity to serve Marshall during this transition to the Sun Belt Conference is an incredible and unique opportunity. I am thrilled to help drive the goals and initiatives of this storied institution."
Kasey received a bachelor's degree in Sport Management from Bluefield University, and a master's degree in Administration/Management from Liberty University. He played men's basketball at Bluefield, and then began his professional career as an Academic Success/Resident Hall Director in the Bluefield College Department of Student Affairs in 2015.
"Marshall University, our athletic department, student-athletes, fans and community all win with the hiring of Rodney," said Chuck McGill, the Assistant Athletic Director for Fan/Donor Engagement and Communications. "This is a huge and necessary step in the evolution of the marketing and branding of all our sports teams and all our student-athletes. We have a shared vision for how we want to deliver content through videos, photos and graphics on social media and other digital platforms. This hire is a seismic shift for our athletic department. Not only that, Rodney, his wife, Rebecca, and their daughter, Olivia, are going to be an incredible addition to add to our Herd family."
The Virginia native had two stints as a men's college basketball coach: first at Bluefield College as the Director of Basketball Operations and Assistant Coach in 2015-16, and then as the Head Assistant Coach and Recruiting Coordinator at Bluefield State College from 2016-19.
Kasey also had a stint as the Director of Athletics/Membership Marketing Coordinator for the City of Bluefield Parks and Recreation from 2016-19.
Kasey officially begins at Marshall on July 18. Follow him on Twitter (@rodney_kasey) and on Instagram (rodney.kasey).
