HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The No. 1 Marshall University Men's Soccer team's (18-3) season came to an end in the third round of the 2023 NCAA Tournament on Sunday at Hoops Family Field. The Herd fell 3-0 to 16th-seeded Stanford (11-3-5).
"I thought it was a good performance by us," Herd men's soccer head coach Chris Grassie said after the match. "Crazy enough I thought the signs were there right from the beginning. We played through them. We possessed the ball. We had great chances. We did what we needed to do. I told the guys I'm super proud of them. We had two played off the line and one the keeper made a great save. We play this weird sport where sometimes the best team doesn't win."

After the teams came out of halftime, Theo Godard fired a first-touch volley towards goal that was saved at the 51:03 mark.
The Herd outshot Stanford 11-10 with the Cardinal defense blocking eight of the home side's shots.
