Marshall Tennis Takes Down Southern Miss, 4-1

Strom dominant in pair of wins to pace Herd victory
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Marshall's women's tennis team earned a 4-1 win over Southern Miss on Saturday morning at Brian David Fox Tennis Center.
Johanna Strom earned a pair of impressive wins to lead the Thundering Herd's effort on the day.
"It was a good day, considering the conditions," Marshall tennis coach John Mercer said. "I thought we mentally hung in there despite the conditions."
On a chilly April morning, Strom and doubles partner Emma Vanderheyden set the tone early by earning a 6-4 win over Southern Miss' No. 1 doubles tandem of Alyssa Richter and Ebru Zeynep Yazgan.
Just seconds later, Marshall's No. 3 doubles team of Gabrielle Clariotte and Rieke Gillar closed out a 6-3 win over Southern Miss' Suhana Das and Zenn Lim to give the Herd the doubles point.
The momentum continued through to singles matches where Marshall's Sophia Hurrion earned a 6-1, 6-3 win over Southern Miss' Hannah Chambers to push the Herd's lead to 2-0.
The critical win came from Strom at No. 1 singles as she defeated Yazgan, 6-2, 6-1, to push Marshall to the brink of victory with a 3-1 advantage.
"It was important that JoJo and Sophia got off to quick starts and finished strong," Mercer said. "It was good to see them play well."
Marshall's Doroteja Joksovic finished off the strongly-contested match with a decisive third set win as her 6-4, 5-7, 6-2 win over Tardivel clinched the victory for the Thundering Herd.
With the win, Marshall moves to 12-6 on the season and 6-2 in Sun Belt action.
The team returns to Brian David Fox Tennis Center at 10 a.m. on Sunday morning for a match against South Alabama.
