Herd standout DL is in top-5 in FBS in three major categories

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Marshall redshirt sophomore defensive end Mike Green has been added to the 2024 Bednarik Award Watch List, the Maxwell Football Club announced on Thursday.

The Bednarik Award has been presented to the College Defensive Player of the Year annually since 1994.

"I couldn't be happier for Mike, a young man who embodies our culture and the values of our program," Marshall Football coach Charles Huff said. "Being recognized for his hard work and talent is great for him and his family."

Green has excelled for the Thundering Herd through the midway point of the 2024 season, leading the Sun Belt and ranking in the Top-5 in FBS in four major statistical categories.

The Williamsburg, Va. Native is No. 3 in FBS in sacks with 8.0 on the season. He is also tied for 2nd in FBS in sack yardage at 60.

Green is 5th nationally in tackles for loss with 10.5 on the season and he's No. 3 in FBS among defensive linemen in tackles with 35 on the year.

Consistency is the biggest component of Green's game. He's had at least 1.0 tackles for loss in each game this season and has registered a sack in five of six contests, including 2.5 sacks against App State and 2.0 sacks against Virginia Tech. He also registered a sack against Ohio State.

The lone game in which Green didn't have a sack came against Western Michigan's run-oriented offense. In that contest, Green showed his prowess against the run, as well, registering a career-high 11 tackles.

The Maxwell Football Club has partnered with Pro Football Focus (PFF) and Phil Steele Publications as selection committee partners for both the Maxwell Award and the Bednarik Award – two of college football's most prestigious awards. Semifinalists for the Bednarik Award will be announced Nov. 12.

The Bednarik Award is named for Chuck "Concrete Charlie" Bednarik, who was an All-American at the University of Pennsylvania and later a multi-year All-Pro linebacker and center for the Philadelphia Eagles. A member of both the College and Pro Football Halls of Fame, Bednarik was the last full-time position player on both offense and defense in the NFL.
