Vic Bubas Cup Standings & Info

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Marshall Athletics is ranked No. 4 in the Sun Belt Conference in the Vic Bubas Cup standings following the winter sports seasons, the Sun Belt Conference released on Thursday.

Marshall currently has 70.5 points and is one of only four teams who have currently accumulated 70 points or more through the fall and winter sports cycles. Marshall also made a sizable jump during winter sports, moving from 7th place after the fall sports cycle to its current location in fourth place.

Marshall Women's Basketball led the way in that surge with 15.0 points during their season, which was 14 points for finishing No. 1 out of 14 teams in the regular season and then a bonus point for winning the SBC Tournament. The 15.0 points earned is the maximum amount of points a program can earn for a sport and the most by any Sun Belt program during the 2023-24 sports year.

The Thundering Herd Men's Soccer program also achieved the feat of winning both the Sun Belt Conference regular season title and the SBC Tournament, which earned them 11.0 points (1st place out of league with 10 teams + bonus point.)

Other strong performances for Marshall programs included Women's Cross Country, which earned 11.0 points for its third-place finish in the SBC and Women's Indoor Track and Field, which finished fourth and earned 10.0 points. Marshall Swim and Dive also finished second in the four-team league to earn 3.0 points.

James Madison leads the Vic Bubas Cup standings after the winter sports cycle with 87.5 points. Arkansas State (74.0 points) is second while App State (72.0) is third.

Points for the Bubas Cup are awarded based on regular-season finish for sports that have a regular season conference schedule. If a sport does not have a regular-season conference schedule, points are awarded based on Sun Belt Championship finish.

The total number of points are awarded based on the number of schools sponsoring the sport (Example: In a 10-team league, the No. 1 team gets 10 points, the team finishing 10th receives 1.0 point). Institutions not sponsoring a sport do not receive any points for that sport.

In the case of a tie, institutions split the combined points of their positions. For example, in a 10-team league, two programs tying for 5th place would each receive 5.5 points (6 points for 5th place + 5 points for 6th place = 11 points divided by 2 teams).

For sports that have both a regular-season schedule and a conference tournament, one additional point will be awarded to the winner of the conference tournament, including an additional point for winning the Sun Belt Conference Football Championship. (See above reference to Marshall Women's Basketball and Marshall Men's Soccer).

For sports with divisions, the conference records of all teams are ranked and points are awarded regardless of divisional finish. Standings for the sports of men's and women's soccer are determined by points rather than winning percentage.

The Vic Bubas Cup is named after the Sun Belt Conference's first Commissioner, who was appointed in 1976 and served for 14 years until his retirement in 1990. He led the conference during a period in which its membership increased from six to eight members and its sport sponsorship grew from four to 10 sports. Bubas was also a three-time ACC Coach of the Year at Duke in the 1960s, taking his team to three Final Fours. In 2007, he was inducted into the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame. Bubas passed away in April 2018 at the age of 91.
