Marshall Officials, SBC Commissioner and Conference Members met to discuss 2024 Independence Bowl opt-out
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The following is a statement from Marshall University and Marshall Athletics.
"Marshall University and Marshall Athletics would like to thank Commissioner Keith Gill and the Sun Belt Conference representatives for their recent dialogue concerning Marshall University's decision to opt out of the 2024 Radiance Technologies Independence Bowl. We accept the Commissioner's decision and wish to apologize to Army, the Sun Belt Conference and the Radiance Technologies Independence Bowl for the impact caused by our decision.
Marshall University is a proud member of the Sun Belt Conference and our inclusion in the league has been an incredible chapter in our university's history. We are committed to ensuring that every experience within the league is a positive one and we look forward to helping bolster the Sun Belt Conference in a positive light in the coming years.
At Marshall University, we pride ourselves on being transformational change agents in many realms. While unfortunate, we are encouraged that our recent decision spurred national dialogue and we hope the lessons that emerged from this situation are transformed into constructive actions for Marshall, our fellow Sun Belt institutions and for the NCAA as a whole.
Marshall University is committed to working with Commissioner Gill, the Sun Belt Conference and the broader collegiate athletic community to do just that."
