Jalen Speer Named SBC Men’s Basketball Player of the Week

NEW ORLEANS – Marshall University Men's Basketball guard Jalen Speer was named the Sun Belt Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Week on Tuesday, announced by the league office.
Speer continued his high-level performances in conference play with 20.5 points, 4.0 assists and 2.0 assists per game in a pair of road wins at Georgia State and Georgia Southern. The graduate student went 14-for-22 (63.6 percent) from the field, 7-for-12 (58.3 percent from three and 6-for-7 (85.7 percent) from the free-throw line.
On Thursday in a victory at Georgia State, the Gainesville, Florida, native tallied a game-high 25 points and seven assists to go with three boards as he shot 66.7 percent (8-for-12) from the field, including 62.5 percent (5-for-8) from downtown.
Speer followed that up with a team-high 16 points, 14 of which came in the second half, on a 60 percent (6-for-10) day from the field and 50 percent (2-for-4) from three-point range.
In SBC games, the graduate student leads the league in three-point percentage (53.3 percent) and makes from long range (32) while ranking second in field-goal percentage (54.1 percent).
Marshall starts a three-game homestand on Thursday night at 7 p.m. against the Georgia State Panthers.
