Kajsa Ekstrom Earns SBC Women's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week Honors

NEW ORLEANS – Marshall senior defender Kajsa Ekstrom has been named the Sun Belt Conference Women's Soccer Defensive Player of the week, the league office announced Tuesday.
Ekstrom played a full 90 minutes in defense in the team's goalless draw at South Alabama Friday night which was no small feat, the Jaguars had scored at least two goals in every home match this season prior to Friday. The Herd backline has now held two of the top teams in the conference without a goal in consecutive games, following the team's clean sheet against Old Dominion on Oct. 5.
Playing a full 90 minutes for Ekstrom is nothing new, the Herd's senior defender has not left the field this season, playing a complete 1,170 of a possible 1,170 minutes in 2025.
"Kajsa is a complete center back who has helped us to achieve five clean sheets so far this season," Coach Simoes said. "She is also a role model for our freshmen and sophomores. She is one of our captains that represents our team culture and winning mentality to her best ability. Kajsa is a player that I wouldn't be surprised if she reaches the pro level after this season."
Ekstrom is Marshall's first conference defensive player of the week since Lauren Hollis in 2021.
Marshall Women's Soccer has three matches remaining in the regular season. The Herd faces App State on the road on Sunday, Oct. 19.
