Commemorative roundel, wall-wrap honor 30-year Herd legacy of “The Voice of The Thundering Herd”
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Marshall Vice President and Director of Athletics Gerald J. Harrison unveiled the 'Steve Cotton Broadcast Suite' on the Working Press level of Joan C. Edwards Stadium on Monday morning.
The namesakes for the space occupying the entranceways to the home radio booth is now known for Steve Cotton, who is celebrating his 30th year as "The Voice of the Thundering Herd" for Marshall Athletics.
"It is my honor to introduce the 'Steve Cotton Broadcast Suite' at Joan C. Edwards Stadium," Harrison said. "I have been fortunate in my life to listen to many legends of sports broadcasting - names like John Ward, Bob Kesling, Bob Harris, and Mike Keith - and now, Steve Cotton stands proudly among them.
"For more than 30 years, Steve's voice and passion for Marshall Athletics have been woven into the very tapestry of our community. His iconic calls have echoed through the hills of West Virginia, becoming the soundtrack of Herd Nation. He has been our eyes, our storyteller, and our companion through triumph and heartbreak. Today, we recognize not just a broadcaster, but a legacy! This honor is more than deserved, and we are grateful for every moment we've shared with the Voice of the Herd."
The newly-christened broadcast area features a roundel denoting the home radio booth as the Steve Cotton Broadcast Suite with a microphone in the middle of the roundel.
On the outside wall beside the entry points for the Steve Cotton Broadcast Suite is a chronological lineage of Marshall's play-by-play voices that celebrates the rich history of the voices who have captured Marshall's historic moments for years.
The 'Steve Cotton Broadcast Suite' was unveiled during a private ceremony on Monday morning inside the Working Press area of Joan C. Edwards Stadium.
"It almost feels like cheating to be honored for being blessed to do what I love to do at a place I've loved to do it," Cotton said. "I was asked (tricked?) to attend a meeting in the press box Monday morning and was greeted by so many friends and the mural with photos and information about all the great Marshall announcers who've been at the Herd microphone dating back to the very first broadcast by Pat Patterson in 1927.
"I've always taken it seriously that there's a responsibility to live up to the effort that so many great sportscasters put into Marshall broadcasts before me. To this day, I hear Herd fans to this day talk about listening to Jim Thacker, Bob Bowen and Frank Giardina. Friends like Stan Cotten, Wes Durham and Bill Roth set high standards and have on to amazing careers at other schools.
"That moment left me without words. To the Herd Nation: Thanks for listening!"
