Four players in double-figures in as Herd defeats Bulls to open season

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - Marshall Men's Basketball stormed out of the gates to the 2026-27 season with a 92-65 opening-night victory over Buffalo at the Cam Henderson Center.

Emmanuel Manyuon led the way for MU with 22 points and 11 rebounds, while Bryce Slay - 19, Fazl Oshodi - 16, and Noah Otshudi - 16, all finished in double figures.

MU stifled the Bulls to just 5-of-27 shooting from behind the arc. The Herd went on a 21-3 run over a seven-minute span of the first half to turn a two-point lead into a 21-point halftime advantage. Marshall never trailed in a successful start to the season for Head Coach Cornelius 'Corny' Jackson's Herd.

"I was pleased with our intensity," Coach Jackson said. "I was pleased with us holding (Buffalo) to six offensive rebounds. (Buffalo is) big, they're big guys. So there are menaces on the boards. I was pleased with that. We had four guys in double figures. We had Emmanuel with a double-double with 11 rebounds. Noah had seven rebounds. Those stats, those intangible stats show me that they're playing hard. So pretty, pretty pleased with the effort that we showed tonight."

With 11 newcomers to the roster, the Herd showed strength in numbers with its 30-5 advantage in bench points. Marshall won the turnover battle and claimed 10 more boards than the Bulls.

The Herd extended its lead up 34 in the second half following a thunderous dunk by Slay to bring the Henderson Center crowd of 3,517 to its feet.

As one of the team's returning players, Slay set a new career-high in game one with his 19 points.

"Today felt great, to get a win in that environment for sure" said Slay. "Honestly, we kind of had a little rough last exhibition, but we harped on it all these last couple of days leading up to this game and we knew we would come out and just try to hit them in their mouth physically. We came out and kept that energy all game."
