Speer leads Marshall with 20 in Saturday’s loss
STATESBORO, Ga. – Marshall Men's Basketball fell on Senior Night at Georgia Southern on Saturday night at Hill Convocation Center in Statesboro, Georgia.
With the loss, Marshall falls to 16-10 on the season and 8-5 in SBC play.
"We fought back, but against a team like that, once they start feeling good, it's hard to fight back and really get back in the game," Marshall Men's Basketball coach Cornelius Jackson said. "They want to score at the basket and shoot threes and we were giving them both. They were shooting 60-plus in both areas at halftime. That was the game."
The Herd cut a 24-point deficit down to single-digits in the final two minutes, but was unable to complete the comeback.
Marshall's scoring was led by Jalen Speer, who scored 20 points and dished out six assists.
Speer scored 17 of his 20 points in the first half, but the Herd could not overcome Georgia Southern's hot shooting early as the Eagles took a 17-point halftime lead.
Landen Joseph added 17 points off the bench while Wyatt Fricks overcame early foul trouble to finish with 17 as well after playing only four minutes in the first half. Noah Otshudi also had 13 points in the loss.
Marshall doesn't have long before its next action as South Alabama visits Cam Henderson Center at 7 p.m. on Monday evening in a game that was rescheduled by winter storms last month.
