A native of Texas, Steele came to Marshall in 1995 after serving in the Rice University Athletic Department from 1984-95, first as ticket manager, then as business manager for athletics and finally as Assistant AD for Business.
A product of Austin's Westlake High School, Steele received his B.A. in Managerial Studies and Political Science from Rice, where he was a three-year letter winner on the varsity golf squad, in 1982. Steele went on to earn a master's degree in Sports Administration from Ohio University in 1984. From there he served an internship with the Houston Astros before joining the Rice athletics department.
