Endowment Scholarship Program

The Big Green Endowed Scholarship Program plays an important role for Marshall University Intercollegiate Athletics. Scholarships lead to success both on the competition field and in the classroom.

Endowed gifts are donations which are invested, with the interest generated from the principal used to fund scholarships for Marshall student-athletes.

Big Green donors who choose to make gifts that fund endowments, permanently link their names or the names of loved ones with Marshall Athletics.

Endowments FAQ

How do endowments affect Marshall Athletics?

Contributions to the Dr. Dorothy “Dot” Hicks Endowed Scholarship Program are invested in perpetuity with a percentage of the value of the endowment transferred to Marshall Athletics annually solely for the use of student-athlete scholarships. This is truly the life blood of our athletic department because of its longevity and specific purpose.

How much money does it take to establish an endowed scholarship?

A minimum gift of $25,000 (payable over a five-year period) is required to establish an individual endowed scholarship, often named after the donor or in memory of a family member, former coach, team, or teammate. While the minimum endowment level is $25,000 there are agreements that range from $50,000 to $450,000.

Gifts of any amount for an existing endowment can also be made to the Big Green.

All gifts to the Big Green are tax deductible. The Big Green Scholarship Foundation is registered with the IRS as a 501 (c) (3) organization.

How do I proceed with establishing an endowment?

Call the Big Green at (304) 696-4661 if you have any questions or would like to discuss your interest in establishing an endowed scholarship.

A member of our team will work with you to write up an endowment agreement and determine the criteria for the selection of the recipient of the scholarship (i.e. sport specific.)

The endowed gift begins to gain interest through responsible investing by the Big Green Board of Trustees’ Endowment Committee and their investment managing partner.

A percentage is taken annually from the value of the endowment and transferred to the Athletic Department to fund the scholarship for a specific student-athlete that will be matched up with you by our academic support team and coaches.

You will be recognized annually for your support and receive invitations to special events including the annual Big Green Endowment Dinner to mee the student-athlete receiving your scholarship. Donors are also recognized on donor recognition walls and electronic and printed materials.
