Alex returns to Marshall as the General Manager for Tony Gibson’s football team. His duties will include overseeing the recruiting and personnel department, negotiating with players and their agents and being The Thundering Herd's NFL liaison.
In 2025, he was the General Manger for Arkansas State under Coach Butch Jones. His duties included, overseeing the recruiting and personnel department, player evaluations, negotiating with agents/players, player visits and the transfer portal. He was also the NFL liaison.
Prior to joining the Red Wolves he was at Virginia Tech where he spent 3 seasons. He was started as the Assistant Director of Player Personnel and then in his second year was promoted to Director of Player Personnel. He played a major role in the Hokies' recruiting and roster management efforts. He headed up the day-to-day scouting operations of the department which included film evaluations, assisting in the recruitment of prospective athletes, helping build and keep track of recruiting boards for of all classes of prospective student-athletes
In his final year was the Interim Senior Director of Player Personnel and was in charge of the entire recruiting department. Jones was in charge of the transfer portal during his 3 seasons with the Hokies and was also their NFL liaison. Five of the players he helped acquire through the portal were selected to participate in the NFL Combine, Antwaun Powell-
Prior to joining Virginia Tech, Jones was the Assistant Director of Player Personnel at Marshall University. He helped assemble its 2022 recruiting class, the highest-rated group in Thundering Herd history. His duties included the transfer portal and he helped land running back Kahlan Laborn who became a first team All-Sun Belt team player.
He joined the Marshall after spending the 2018 season as the director of football operations at Fairmont State University in Fairmont, WV.
Jones began his career as a football operations intern with the NFL's Cleveland Browns and Detroit Lions. He earned his bachelor's degree in sport management from Baldwin Wallace University and a master's degree in sport management from West Virginia University.
