When Marshall women first began participating in intercollegiate competition, the chances were good that Beverly Duckwyler was involved. The 5-foot-10 center led Coach Donna Lawson’s basketball “Green Gals” to a perfect 7-0 record in their inaugural season of 1969-70. In 1970-71 the team logged a 13-4 mark, winning the West Virginia State Tournament title and advancing to the Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (AIAW) Regional Tournament. The following season, Duckwyler led the team to a 20-0 start and a final record of 21-1, winning another West Virginia State Tournament title and winning two games at the 1972 AIAW Regional Tournament, over Ball State and Western Illinois.
On Feb. 13, 1971, Duckwyler led Marshall to a 63-58 win over Eastern Kentucky in the Marshall Invitational Tournament with a 22-point, 22-rebound double-double, winning Tournament MVP honors. On Feb. 19, 1972, she set a still-standing school record by pulling down 25 rebounds (in addition to scoring 17 points) in a 73-42 win at Louisville.
As a member of the Marshall volleyball team, Duckwyler helped the team to a 6-5 record in its first season of competition in 1970, then to a 24-9 mark the next year where she received All-Tournament recognition for leading Marshall to a second place finish at a tournament hosted by West Georgia, and also a championship in the West Virginia State Tournament. Duckwyler also competed in the 220-yard dash, high jump and softball throw in track and field, and was a member of the 880-yard relay team. After graduating at Marshall, she became an assistant basketball coach for Lawson, helping the team win three more state championships and to three more Midwest AIAW Tournament berths, and then became a high school basketball coach in Paducah, Ky. Duckwyler was inducted into the Marshall Athletic Hall of Fame in 1986.
