Bill Archer
- Induction:
- 2004
- Class:
- 1971
When Bill Archer won the West Virginia State wrestling championship for Huntington High School in 1966, little did anyone know that it was the first of so many for him. After high school, Archer moved on to Marshall, where he capped off an outstanding career with the Thundering Herd by logging a 12-5-1 dual meet record as a senior in 1971, eventually placing third at the Mid-Western Independent Colleges meet. Archer then returned to his high school alma mater to serve as a teacher, administrator and wrestling coach, where over the next 35 years he coached his team to 465 wins and helped 26 individuals win state titles, including 1988 U.S. Olympian Ken Chertow. Archer was named the West Virginia Coach of the Year three times and the National Coach of the Year in 2001 by the National High School Coaches Association. He was inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame in 2007 and the Marshall Athletic Hall of Fame in 2004.
