Between 1953 and 1969 Marshall regularly had wrestlers placing at the Mid-American Conference Tournament, but the only one who won a league title was Bill Cyrus. The South Charleston, W.Va., native progressed throughout his Thundering Herd career, finishing at third place in the 137-pound class at the MAC Championships at Kent State as a sophomore in 1960 and second to Miami’s Fred Scott in the 130-pound classification in the 1961 league championships at Ohio University. Finally, as a senior in 1962, Cyrus gave Marshall its first MAC champion when he won the 130-pound title at Toledo. Cyrus became a U.S. Army captain and flew reconnaissance aircraft during the Vietnam War, then came back to Marshall and served as an assistant wrestling coach for Larry Coyer and became the Herd’s head coach for two seasons from 1968-70. Cyrus was inducted into the Marshall Athletic Hall of Fame in 1992.
