When Marshall University was granted a waiver by the NCAA to play freshmen in 1971 because of the plane tragedy the previous fall, Chuck Henry became the youngest member of the “Young Thundering Herd.” The Conway, S.C., native not only got on the field as a 17-year-old that fall, he led the team with 149 tackles as an undersized, 180-pound linebacker. Henry also led the Herd with 130 tackles the following season, including an amazing 30 against Miami (Ohio) at Fairfield Stadium in 1972, a total that remains Marshall’s single-game record. As Marshall built its depth in the years to come, Henry moved to a more natural position in the secondary for his final two seasons and had amassed 408 tackles by the time his career came to a close, at the time the most in school history. Henry was inducted into the Marshall Athletic Hall of Fame in 2006.
