HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall University Volleyball Team (14-8, 7-4 SBC) saw its rally in the weekend opener against Georgia Southern fall short in five sets (26-24, 25-22, 22-25, 18-25, 15-12) on Thursday evening in the Cam Henderson Center.
Â
"Really big fight out of this group," Herd Volleyball Head Coach Heather Stout said. "I mean we love five sets. I know it's something we've been saying, but it took us a little too long to execute the gameplan."
Â
The Herd saw three register double-figure kills with Maddie Smith leading the way at 17, Beatrice Ciccarelli at 15 and Emma Barnett at 13. Smith also picked up 15 digs as Barnett had 14 for both to record double-doubles in the contest.
Â
Kahea Carvalho finished with 30 assists and Emma Sayre lead the team with 21 digs.
Â
Marshall found itself with its back against wall after dropping narrow first and second sets 26-24 and 25-22, respectively.
Â
The two sides then found themselves in a see-saw battle in the third. The third frame saw the scoreboard tied nine times with six lead changes as the score sat tied 19-19 late in the set. Peyton Sasse, who played in just the final three sets, gave MU a 20-19 lead on one of her eight kills in the match. The finish proved to be the final lead change of the set. Marshall captured five of the final eight points capped off by a Barnett kill to force a fourth at 25-22.
Â
Trailing 11-8 in the fourth, Marshall called a timeout. The Herd went off on a 7-0 run, featuring a pair of Barnett kills, and finished by a Carvalho service ace to take a 15-11 advantage. The home side cruised the rest of the way taking the frame 25-18 and forcing a fifth set. Marshall hit .400 in the set, finishing 16 of its 35 attacks with just two errors.
Â
The fifth set saw the teams tied at 5-5 through the first 10 points. However, the Eagles used a 4-0 run to go on top 9-5 and eventually held off the Herd's comeback with a 15-12 win to seal the match.
