Completes weekend sweep of the Monarchs

NORFOLK, Va. – The Marshall University Volleyball Team (14-7, 7-3 SBC) closed the weekend with a hard-fought four-set win (24-26, 26-24, 25-17, 25-23) win over the Old Dominion Monarchs to complete its weekend sweep in Norfolk, Virginia, on Saturday.

"We'll always take a conference win. Proud of our teams battle especially during some adversity," Herd Volleyball Head Coach Heather Stout said. "Early in the match, we were scrambling to find our rhythm and took too long to establish a quality first ball, both defensively and in serve receive. Once we started passing better, our setters did a great job distributing the offense, and both of our right sides were crucial to our success. Later in set three, we finally started applying more pressure from the service line, which helped us build confidence and keep them out of system. That made a tremendous difference for us down the stretch."

Emma Barnett picked up her second double-double of the weekend with 13 digs and 12 kills as Beatrice Ciccarelli and Carys Kerr joined her in double-figure kills at 10 each.

Marae Reilly was dominant at the net with seven blocks as Kahea Carvalho had 29 assists and Addison Saunders led the team with 19 digs.

The first set was a see-saw battle between the two sides as it was tied 6-6 after the first 12 points. The Monarchs then took six of the next eight to grab a 12-8 lead. The Herd clawed back and after a 4-0 run late, took a 23-21 advantage after a Reilly and Barnett block assist. However, ODU captured five of the final six points to take the opening frame in extra points 26-24.

The second set was similar to the first. MU jumped out to a 6-1 lead to see ODU take the next five points to tie it 6-6. The two sides traded points and leads until the Monarchs had set point at 24-23. However, a kill by Barnett, a Monarch attacking error and a service ace from Carvalho pushed the Herd to a 26-24 win in the second.

In the third, the two sides sat deadlocked at 12-12 through the first 24 points. That's when Marshall kicked it into gear. A 5-0 run led by a pair of kills from Ciccarelli gave the Herd a 17-12 advantage as they never looked back. MU took eight of the final 13 points with a kill by Kerr ending the frame at 25-17 to see Marshall up 2-1 heading into the fourth.

For the third time in the match, Old Dominion and Marshall were tied at 23-23 in the fourth after trading points and rallies throughout the frame. The Herd gutted out the set with a Maddie Smith kill and a Monarchs attacking error to garner the final two points to seal the set 25-23 and the match.

"Looking forward to celebrating this one tonight and then turning our attention to next week as we prepare to be back in the Cam to take on Georgia Southern," Stout said. "We are amped to be home!"
