NORFOLK, Va. – The Marshall University Volleyball Team (13-7, 6-3 SBC) opened the weekend with a sweep (25-17, 25-23, 25-14) of the Old Dominion Monarchs on Friday night in Norfolk, Virginia.

"So proud of this group and the way they continue to battle," Herd Volleyball Head Coach Heather Stout said. "Both of our middles were prime performers tonight! Marae Reilly was on fire offensively, while Cicca made a huge impact on both sides of the ball, especially with some big-time defensive plays late in the game! I thought late in the match we found Maddie Smith at crucial points and she delivered."

Emma Barnett recorded a double-double with a team-high 12 kills and 10 digs. Marae Reilly was dominant on the attack with 10 kills on 13 attacks with no errors for a .769 hitting percentage.

Kahea Carvalho led the team with 22 assists as Beatrice Ciccarelli had a game-high five blocks.

The Herd never trailed in the opening set and the score was only tied once at 1-1. With a 9-8 lead, Marshall went on an 8-1 run, taking advantage of four Monarch errors, three kills by Barnett and a service ace by Carvalho to grab a 17-9 lead, its largest of the opening frame. Maddie Smith ended the set with a kill as MU took the first 25-17.

The second set was back-and-forth by the two sides as the score was tied seven times with five lead changes. With the score tied 5-5, the Herd used kills from Reilly and Barnett with a Smith service ace to take an 8-5 advantage. Marshall held the lead the majority of the way until ODU fought back to take a late lead at 23-22. However, an ODU and two Barnett kills led MU to a 25-23 win in the second and take a 2-0 lead into the third.

The third was all Herd. Like the first, it was only tied at 1-1. However, Marshall took its largest lead of the match at 11 points with a 19-8 lead after a block assist by Ciccarelli and Smith. The two sides traded the final 12 points until a service ace by Isabelle Nieves sealed the set, 25-14, and the sweep. MU hit .426 with 13 kills on 26 attacks and just two errors.

"We've got a few things to clean up with our passing and blocking tomorrow, but this group continues to respond, fight, and find ways to win," Stout said. "One more opportunity to get better and bring home a win to Huntington!"
