Legendary Marshall baseball coach Jack Cook had to make the most of every dollar in his recruiting budget, so it undoubtedly helped a bit when he was able to ink an all-league outfielder without ever leaving his own house. Chip Cook decided to stay “home” and play for his father with the Thundering Herd, and by his sophomore season the younger Cook blossomed into one of the team’s top hitters. After part-time duty as a freshman in 1982, Cook batted .305 in 1983 and then .279 as a junior before he exploded to first team All-Southern Conference honors by hitting .428 as a senior in 1985. In that senior season Cook helped Marshall to a 26-18-1 record, at the time the second-most wins in school history, as he led the team not only in average, but also in runs (52), doubles (17), total bases (100) and slugging percentage (.690) while also blasting seven home runs and driving in 36 runs. Cook was inducted into the Marshall Athletic Hall of Fame in 1998.
