Chris Massey began his Marshall career as a linebacker, but then became a long snapper who never had a bad snap in over 500 attempts and parlayed that into a 10-year NFL career. Massey came to Marshall out of Chesapeake, W.Va., and as a freshman helped the Thundering Herd to its first bowl win, 48-29 over Louisville in the 1998 Motor City Bowl. As a sophomore in 1999, Marshall logged a perfect 13-0 record and the team’s highest ranking, No. 10 in the final polls. He helped Marshall win another Mid-American Conference title and bowl game in 2000, then was a captain for his senior season, a year that was capped by Marshall’s “Miracle in Mobile” – a 64-61 double-overtime victory over East Carolina in the GMAC Bowl.
Massey was chosen by the St. Louis Rams in the seventh round of the 2002 NFL Draft and played nine seasons in St. Louis as the snapper and part-time fullback before finishing his career with the Chicago Bears in 2011. In his 10-year NFL career Massey was good on 1,109 of his 1,110 career snaps. Massey was inducted into the Marshall Athletic Hall of Fame in 2015.
