Upon graduating as a star athlete in Mount Hope, W.Va., Chuck Fieldson’s dreams of playing college football at Marshall for Cam Henderson were delayed as he served in the U.S. Army during World War II. Once out of the service, he was finally able to make his way to Marshall to play for Henderson’s Big Green in 1946. As a sophomore in 1947, Fieldson was an offensive and defensive back and scored 14 touchdowns for a team that went 9-2 during the regular season and received a bid to play in the Tangerine Bowl on New Year’s Day, the first bowl game in Marshall history, a 7-0 defeat at the hands of the Catawba College Indians. Fieldson was named a captain by Henderson the following season, but was able to play in only one game before a broken arm ended his season. He finished his career the following year on Henderson’s last football team.

After graduating from Marshall, Fieldson spent 33 years as a social studies and history teacher at Miami Beach High School in Florida, serving as a football coach, the head basketball coach from 1957-1984 and the athletic director from 1968-1987. The gymnasium at Miami Beach High School was named for Fieldson in 1991, and the Chuck Fieldson Award is given each year to an outstanding student-athlete at the school. He was named the Miami Herald Coach of the Year in 1965, was inducted into the Florida Athletic Coaches Hall of Fame in 1981 and the Miami Beach Hall of Fame in 2004. Fieldson was inducted into the Marshall Athletic Hall of Fame in 1988.
