When Marshall won the Southern Conference championship in 1995 – in just the second season that Marshall fielded a team – the tournament’s most valuable player was Thundering Herd freshman pitcher Christy Waring. The La Mirada, Calif., product shut out Tennessee-Chattanooga in the event’s first game, 4-0, and beat Furman 7-1 to clinch the championship. Not only a standout pitcher who established virtually every career record for the fledgling Marshall program, Waring also played first base when she wasn’t pitching and when her career was complete she had established several school records for hitting and pitching, including marks for career triples (10) career wins (85), complete games (104), shutouts (29) and saves (9) that stood for decades. She was the first team All-Southern Conference pitcher in 1997. Waring was inducted into the Marshall Athletic Hall of Fame in 2005.
