A four-year letter winner in basketball and track & field at Fairland High School in Proctorville, Ohio, Deanna Carter excelled in both on the college level for Marshall. The 5-foot-9 forward got her feet wet with the 1979-80 basketball team, averaging 5.2 points and 5.8 rebounds per game as a freshman, then moved right into the track season where she was named the Outstanding Runner as she led Marshall to the West Virginia AIAW state championship, where she finished second in the 220-yard dash, third in the high jump and was a member of the first-place 440-yard and mile relay teams. Carter-Natale flourished in both sports throughout the rest of her career and, when her time at Marshall had come to a close, she held several school records, including 22 rebounds in a game against West Virginia University in 1980, and most free throws attempted (146) and made (87) in a single season. She scored 1,044 career points, which at the time was the fourth most in school history, and finished with 747 rebounds, which was at the time the most in school history. She married Marshall football tight end Mike Natale, and was inducted into the Marshall Athletic Hall of Fame in 1993.
