Not only did Dick Shepard win the 1965 Mid-American Conference Championship Tournament title, helping Marshall to a second-place team finish, he was also a member of the MAC champion Herd the following season. In 1964, Shepard teamed with Sam Snead to win the Pro-Am title at the West Virginia PGA Championship. The Huntington native twice was named All-MAC and was an honorable mention All-American as a senior. He played as an individual at the 1965 NCAA Tournament in Knoxville, Tenn., and in 1966 in Palo Alto, Calif. After graduating from Marshall, Shepard served in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War. He remained a successful golfer, winning the Ohio Amateur Championship in 1970 and in 1973 he became the only person to win all five “major” tournaments in Stark County, Ohio. Shepard is a member of the Roanoke Valley (Va.) Golf Hall of Fame, and the Stark County (Ohio) Golf Hall of Fame. He was inducted into the Marshall Athletic Hall of Fame in 2002.
