Huffman, Frank

Frank Huffman
- Induction:
- 2007
- Class:
- 1938
An all-state performer for Woodrow Wilson High School, Frank Huffman’s college career was delayed when he suffered an injury doing road construction work in the summer of 1935. When Marshall Coach Cam Henderson visited Huffman in the hospital and gave him an offer to play for the Thundering Herd even though he would spend his freshman season in a neck brace, the Beckley, W.Va., product took Henderson up on it. Once he was able to play, Huffman became a three-year starter on the Marshall line, twice winning All-Buckeye Conference honors and helping the Herd win the 1937 league championship. On Dec. 9, 1938, Huffman became Marshall’s second player taken in an NFL Draft when the Chicago Cardinals picked him in the 18th round – Marshall’s Boot Elkins had also been picked by the Cardinals, one round earlier. Huffman played three seasons as a tackle with Chicago, then left football to serve in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. He was inducted into the Marshall Athletic Hall of Fame in 2007.
