One of the most versatile track and field athletes in school history, Garland Barnhart helped Marshall to multiple titles in the Ohio Valley Conference. Recruited to Marshall after breaking the West Virginia state high jump record for Ansted High School, he competed in the pole vault, high jump, broad jump, shot put, discus and even sprints for the Thundering Herd. Barnhart took second at the 1953 MAC Championships with a pole vault of 12 feet, 8 inches. He lettered three years in track and field for Marshall and scored 14 points for the Herd in its second-straight OVC title run, with a league-record 12 foot, 6 inch pole vault, in addition to two third-place finishes in the high jump and broad jump. Barnhart played freshman football for Marshall in 1950 and lettered in 1952 and 1953 as a 6-foot-1, 188-pound running back. He later became a football and track coach at Charleston's Stonewall Jackson High School. Barnhart was inducted into the Marshall Athletic Hall of Fame in 2018.
