In his four seasons (1986-89) as Marshall’s head football coach, George Chaump led the Thundering Herd to a 33-16-1 record and, in 1987, to the school’s first appearance in the NCAA Division I-AA national championship game. The Scranton, Pa., native also led Marshall to its first Southern Conference title in 1988 and, that same season, to its first No. 1 national (I-AA) ranking. An assistant coach for Woody Hayes at Ohio State (1968-78) and later for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (1979-81), Chaump came to Marshall after four seasons as the head coach at Division II Indiana (Pa.). After leaving Marshall, he served as the head coach at Navy for five seasons, then returned to his roots, coaching several seasons of high school football in the Harrisburg, Pa., area. Chaump was inducted into the Marshall Athletic Hall of Fame in 2013.
