Marshall Athletics Hall of Fame

George Queen
- Induction:
- 1990
- Class:
- 1925
One of the top all-around athletes in the early years of Marshall athletics, if the Green and White was involved in an athletic competition in the early to mid-1920s, George Queen was probably right in the middle of the action. Queen came to Marshall out of Man High School in Logan County and played four years as an end on the football team – for a different head coach each season. Queen also played three seasons of basketball for Marshall – again for a different head coach each year – and was the team captain as a senior on the 1924-25 basketball team that set a new school record with 12 wins under Coach Russ Meredith. Queen also was the star one-mile and two-mile distance runner for the Marshall track team for three seasons, as the second baseman once helped the baseball team turn a triple play against Kentucky Wesleyan and led the 1924 team to a 7-2 record, and as a senior went unbeaten as a member of the school’s tennis team. Queen served as team captain in baseball, basketball, track and tennis. After graduating from Marshall, Queen returned to his hometown and became a teacher and coach – in six different sports at one time or another – and the Man High School football stadium is named the George A. Queen Memorial Stadium. Queen was inducted into the Marshall Athletic Hall of Fame in 1990.
