Selected as the Marshall Pitcher of the Year in his sophomore, junior and senior seasons, Greg Kappas fashioned a career of numbers that still rank high in the Thundering Herd record book. The Newport, Ky., native burst onto the Marshall scene with a 1.57 ERA as a freshman in 1974 and by the time his career was finished he had pitched 19 complete games and registered 17 wins with a 2.57 ERA. After graduation, Kappas passed up on a chance to sign a professional contract with the Boston Red Sox to enter the ministry and eventually earned a doctorate degree from the Western Seminary in Portland, Ore., and has authored several books. Kappas was inducted into the Marshall Athletic Hall of Fame in 2012.
