Quite possibly the high point in the history of Marshall baseball came with Greg Rowsey on the mound. On May 20, 1978, the Thundering Herd senior pitched a complete-game nine-hitter, giving Marshall a 9-3 win over Clemson and moving the Herd within one win of the College World Series in Omaha, Neb. Marshall had shut out Florida State 4-0 in its first-round game and was the last unbeaten team in the NCAA South Atlantic Regional in Coral Gables, Fla., but the host Miami Hurricanes beat Marshall in the next two games to end the Herd’s season. That ended Rowsey’s career as a Marshall player, a career that began with the Huntington native posting a 2-0 record and 1.38 earned run average as a freshman in 1975. As a senior, Rowsey led that 1978 team to what was then a school-record 27 wins, a Southern Conference title, and a school-best No. 14 ranking during the season and No. 17 ranking in the final poll. Rowsey then served as an assistant to Coach Jack Cook for seven seasons, tutoring pitchers like Rick Reed and Jeff Montgomery, who would go on to pitch in the Major Leagues, and then served for many years as a youth and high school coach in the Huntington area. Rowsey was inducted into the Marshall Athletic Hall of Fame in 1999.
