Harry "Cy" Young
- Induction:
- 2002
- Class:
- 1912
One of the greatest athletes to set foot on the Marshall campus, Harry “Cy” Young suited up for the Marshall varsity football, baseball and track teams from 1910-12 while still a high school student. The precocious Young quarterbacked the football team to a combined 9-2-2 mark in the 1910 and 1911 seasons, helped the 1911 and 1912 baseball teams to a 21-7 ledger as a pitcher and outfielder, and won the 50- and 100-yard dashes at the state track meet in 1912. Young went on to college at Washington & Lee, where he earned 16 letters – four each in football, basketball, baseball and track – garnering All-American honors in both football and basketball. After playing minor league baseball, Young would coach football and baseball at the College of William & Mary and basketball at Washington & Lee. Young was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1958, and is also a member of the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame, the Washington & Lee Hall of Fame and the West Virginia Sports Hall of Fame. He was inducted into the Marshall Athletic Hall of Fame in 2002.
