Wide receiver Jim Cure holds the rare distinction of being honored as a first team all-conference selection every year that he suited up for the Marshall varsity. A product of Gary (W.Va.) High School, where he also played baseball and ran track for the Coaldiggers, Cure made his mark on Marshall and the Mid-American Conference from the very start of his sophomore season after playing a season of junior varsity ball. As a sophomore, Cure was the MAC’s leading receiver when he snared 46 passes for 666 yards and four touchdowns, also grabbing first-team All-MAC honors. He led the MAC again as a junior, with 40 catches, 543 yards and two scores as the Thundering Herd improved to 5-4-1 under Coach Charlie Snyder – only its third winning season since Cam Henderson stopped coaching football in 1949. Cure’s numbers dropped a bit during his senior year when Marshall had many more weapons and logged a 7-3 record, but he was a team captain and still led Marshall with 27 catches, 387 yards and one touchdown and was named first team All-MAC for the third consecutive season. Marshall would not have another winning season for 20 years.
Cure’s 666 receiving yards in 1962 established a Marshall record that would stand until 1981, and his 113 career receptions tied fellow Hall of Famer Jim Swierczek’s school mark and would remain the best until Hall of Famer Fuzzy Filliez broke the mark a decade later. Cure was inducted into the Marshall Athletic Hall of Fame in 1985.
