John Milhoan
- Induction:
- 1986
- Class:
- 1960
Despite sharing the court with some of the greatest scorers in Marshall history, John Milhoan still managed 1,222 points during his Thundering Herd career and rose twice to receive All-Mid-American Conference honors. Known for his great shooting touch, the 6-foot-3 guard from Gallipolis, Ohio, was especially adept at the free throw line, where he made 83.7 percent (252-of-301) of his career attempts. As a sophomore, Milhoan was a member of a team that included fellow Marshall Hall of Famers Sonny Allen, Leo Byrd, Jack Freeman and Hal Greer and led the nation in scoring with an average of 88.2 points per game. That season Milhoan made 63-of-69 at the free throw line, a 91.3 percent rate that stands as the second-best single-season mark in school history. Milhoan rose to win second team All-MAC honors as a junior, then as a senior – after the departure of All-American Leo Byrd, Milhoan was named team captain as a senior and asked to take on more of a scoring role. He responded by averaging 23.3 points per game, receiving first team All-MAC honors. After his senior season, Milhoan was selected by the Cincinnati Royals in the 13th round of the 1960 NBA Draft. He was inducted into the Marshall Athletic Hall of Fame in 1986.
