J.R. Vanhoose
- Induction:
- 2008
- Class:
- 2002
Few in basketball history have scored and rebounded in their high school and college careers like J.R. VanHoose. As a Parade All-American and two-time state player of the year for Paintsville High School, which he led to the 1996 Kentucky Sweet Sixteen state championship, VanHoose scored more than 3,000 points and pulled down more than 2,000 rebounds, and was named Kentucky's Mr. Basketball in 1998. He continued to put up impressive numbers from the very beginning at Marshall, from the time he won Mid-American Conference All-Freshman team honors in 1999 to being named first team all-league and an Academic All-American as a senior in 2002. By the time his Thundering Herd career had come to a close, he had moved into the all-time Marshall top five by scoring 1,803 points and was the No. 2 rebounder in school history with 1,086, leading Marshall in rebounding all four years of his career. After completing his Marshall career, VanHoose went on to a career as a teacher and basketball coach in his native Johnson County, Ky. He was inducted into the Marshall Athletic Hall of Fame in 2008.
