One of the most accomplished athletes to wear the Green and White, Kristina Behnfeldt is the only Marshall basketball player, male or female, to score more than 2,000 points (2,117) and pull down more than 1,000 rebounds (1,101). The Defiance, Ohio, product made an immediate impact for the Thundering Herd, receiving All-Southern Conference honors as a freshman and then again as a sophomore as she led Marshall to the 1997 league title and the school’s first NCAA Tournament berth. As Marshall then moved into the Mid-American Conference, Behnfeldt twice more received all-conference honors in that league, was a two-time GTE Academic All-American and also was twice honored with the Dr. Dorothy Hicks Award as Marshall’s top female student-athlete. Jersey No. 42 is retired in her honor. Behnfeldt was inducted into the Marshall Athletic Hall of Fame in 2004.
