COLUMBIA, S.C. – The No. 21 Marshall Men's Soccer Team (9-2-4, 5-1-2 SBC) grabbed another three key points in a 2-1 road win in Columbia, South Carolina, over the No. 23 South Carolina Gamecocks on Friday night.

The victory marked the fifth straight for the Herd, including their fourth consecutive win on the road. Goncalo Machado finished the contest with an assist and the game-winning goal, his second of the season.

"Fantastic display from the boys and that second half was probably the best 45 minutes of football that we played all season," Herd Men's Soccer Head Coach Chris Grassie said. "We really came together, and we started to dominate the play. I think it was, you know, two magical goals. Haruhi's overhead kick was fantastic. Goncalo's strike was brilliant as well, but I think you know the thing that stood out to me is the togetherness of the team, how well it worked defensively. Then how composed we were on the ball and just absolutely dominated that second half, which was great to see. We just settled down. We put together strings of passes a lot more often. We probed and hit them when they were vulnerable, so it was a great, great game. The really good part of this team is that we're peaking at the right time. We're looking forward to ODU which would be a very tough battle. So we're going to need Herd Nation to come out and support us through it."

Coming out of halftime with the score tied 1-1, Alan Horrocks made his third save of the contest in the 71st minute on a Mika Habel attempt. Marshall carried the momentum from the save when in the 77th minute a poor clearance by the South Carolina defense found Machado just outside the 18-yard box. Machado then one-timed a shot into the right side of the goal past Noah Scheidweiler to give MU a 2-1 advantage.

However, the game was not over. The Gamecocks pressured the Herd in the final seconds as the defense cleared another Habel shot from the goaline with 11 seconds to go and survived a handball review to hold on for the win.

In the first half, Horrocks made a pair of saves in the first 28 minutes of the contest.

Just under three minutes after his second, Machado sent a pass to Joao Roberto, who sent in a cross to find Haruhi Taneda inside the 18-yard box. Taneda then bicycle kicked it home for his second goal of the season at the 30:08 mark to give Marshall the initial lead.

South Carolina's Jamie Grayson equalized for the home side 2:30 before halftime sending the sides into the break at 1-1.

The Herd outshot the Gamecocks 13-10, but South Carolina had more shots on goal (5-2).
