Known as one of the hardest hitters to don the pads at Marshall, middle linebacker Larry McCloud averaged nearly 120 tackles per season over his four-year career. A two-time All-Southern Conference performer, the Wayne County, W.Va., native, was named the West Virginia high prep player of the year as a senior at Buffalo Wayne High School. He led the 1996 NCAA Division I-AA national champions with 150 total tackles, 97 of them solo tackles. As Marshall made the jump to Division I-A the following year, McCloud again led the team in tackles, with 143, and received All-MAC recognition as the Thundering Herd won the title in its first season in the new league. At the inaugural Motor City Bowl following the 1997 season, McCloud’s ferocious hit on Ole Miss tight end Rufus French is talked about to this day by those who witnessed it. His 451 career tackles remain to this day the third most in school history. McCloud was inducted into the Marshall Athletic Hall of Fame in 2009. (Photo Courtesy of The Herald-Dispatch)
